The Scottish people voted against the independence of their country. However, the sequence they have just lived will remain on their minds for long time. In a certain way, the “yes” won, too. David Cameron should listen this message and draw conclusions about the policy he's leading.
We can legitimately question the "EU membership" option or the ability of a small independent state to face alone the capitalist globalization and financial markets in order to protect its people. But a strong demand for a political change has been expressed. High aspirations for democracy and social development have emerged in Scotland.
The pro "yes" succeeded in an impressive mobilization of citizens and workers, challenging the historical domination of London on Edinburgh, as well as the liberal policies that threatened the social protection, crucial in a country devastated by desindustrialization.
The case of Scotland is singular. The European landscape is much more alarming. Many “selfish” separatist demands are developing. Some rich regions deny the sharing with their neighbours. The European left, that promotes solidarity among peoples and territories, can not identify with regionalist logics based on closure.
That is the reason why the EL continues to fight tirelessly against austerity and liberal institutional reforms that weaken states in their ability to produce cohesion and that increase inequalities between territories.
