The European Left condemns the terror attack in Tunisia on 24 November, in which 13 security personnel of the Tunisian President Béji Caïd Essebsi were killed in a bus on its way to the Presidential palace. Until now unidentified assailants carried out the attack, described as a suicide attack.
This terror attack raises again the issue of how to contain and eliminate terrorism. To do this the root causes should be addressed: To contribute to conflict resolution and peace in the Middle East and Northern Africa region. An important contribution to this is to restrict and remove the sources of financial support to Daesh and other terrorist groups.
This terrorism grew out of Western interventions in this area. The continuing attempt by the Western powers to eliminate Daesh by bombing raids will turn out to be futile. Likewise, the Western alliance with the regimes of Saudi-Arabia and Qatar, who fund Daesh, is fundamentally counter-productive.
