Yesterday, Thursday, October 15, the columns of the Euromarchas arrived to Brussels. The Party of the Europe Left (EL), with Natassa Theodorakopoulou, member of its Executive, went to receive the Southwest column which left Cadiz on September 30th and toured Spain and France holding conferences, meetings, and demonstrations in all the stops of its tour. The intention was to have begun in Gibraltar to denounce one of European tax havens, but they did not let them enter.
The column southwest crossed France to arrive yesterday early in the morning to the Belgian capital. They were the first to enter Brussels and also those who at 11 a.m. headed the end of the march, already on foot, in company of Belgian and German partners, among other. They headed towards the headquarters of the European Commission with the intention of preventing the access of the presidents and heads of State to the EU Summit meeting which began yesterday.
When the march came to the meeting point, in one of the routes of access to the Commission surrounded by the police, Belgians activists and trade union joined, along with others come from Germany, Portugal and Italy, in addition to some Euro MPs of parties members of the European Left.
In a festive and vindictive atmosphere, speeches denouncing the TTIP and European policies of austerity were combined with musical performances trying to make more pleasant the event that, under the cold and rain, lasted until almost 5 o'clock.
At that time Greece column arrive to Brussels, and all gathered overnight at a cultural centre that welcomes participants in the marches and where there was a discussion on the TTIP and human rights.
In total, more than 600 demonstrators gathered in different points close to the European Commission with the intention of peacefully preventing the arrival of EU leaders to the meeting of the European Summit, with a result of over 120 detained protesters, that hours later were released in what ended as an administrative detention.
The activities of these three days of actions, organized with the active participation of 10 countries and over 300 organizations, will continue throughout the Friday 16 with various conferences devoted to discuss the debt, the immigration and climate change and agriculture. A political meeting which will discuss the organisation and strategy to be followed will be held at 7 in the afternoon.
The vindictive actions will culminate with a demonstration on Saturday, international day of the fight against poverty. The Party of the European Left will participate in the demonstration which will begin at 2 p.m. in front of the European Parliament.
