The European Forum for Alternative, held this weekend in the Place de la République in Paris, finished on Sunday with a plenary in which, after the victory of Syiriza, they proposed an Alliance to win the battle against the Europe of Austerity.
There were many speeches about the reorganization of the left and how to win this pulse against neoliberalism. Everybody agreed with the need to organise the solidarity with the Greek people, but Syriza speakers also urged the left to get into government in other European countries in order to strength together the fight against the Europe of the markets and authoritarianism.
At this point everybody looked with hope at a next victory of the anti- neoliberalist left forces in Spain and Italy.
From Spain, and from Izquierda Unida, the vice-president of the Party of the European Left (EL), Maite Mola, gave an important answer, reinforced by the results of the recent local and regional elections in Spain last May 24: "the solution is the construction of the Popular Unity in Europe, in Spain, in Portugal …”
She explained that the election results have shown that the left has won in the places where they have concurred in Popular Unity candidacy, and when parties went alone they got half of the votes than when they were in coalition. She gave the example of Galicia, where coalitions of parties, along with social movements, achieved 30% of the votes, reminding that "with less of 30% you cannot govern".
“It is necessary to join and to elaborate a program against austerity, for a public banking and for the social services to overcome the bipartisanship. We must construct Popular Unity, and those who do not want to work for it, they will have to cope with that responsibility. She also clarified that Izquierda Unida has been in all Popular Unity process and that it will continue working on it.
For this construction, added Maite Mola, “we all must be in the Marx´s line, when he said "workers of the world, unite because you have nothing to lose, only your chains, chains that today are called 'capitalist system'." And she added: "We must create politic, but also to know where to go".
The Vice-President of EL spoke of the future, and pointed that there are only two ways to continue in Europe: carry on in this Europe of capitalism and authoritarianism, or achieve a Europe of solidarity, justice, peoples’ Europe and feminist Europe. On one side is the capitalism, as military arm of imperialism, generator of racism, xenophobia and the Islamic State. On the other side, a Government such as Syriza “that works for the people and not markets”.
