The Executive Board of the Party of the European Left (EL) fully agreed to support the people of Kobane, who is being attacked by the heavily armed Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
So assured Pierre Laurent, the president of the EL, who has just arrived from the Turkish border area with Kobane, leading a delegation of the Party of the European Left, which has been visiting the area, the refugee camps and has met with local authorities to have knowledge of the situation from the ground.
The president of the EL responded this way to the request of help made by Eyyup Doru, representative of the People's Democratic Party (HDP) in Europe, that was the guest speaker in the Executive Board held in Athens last weekend.
Laurent, explained that the "urgent need" to help refugees exceeds the humanitarian dimensions: "it is a political problem of solidarity with the Kurdish people". It is estimated that of 140.000 refugees who have been able to cross the border with Turkey, only between 6.000 and 7.000 have received help from the Turkish authorities. During the visit, the delegation proved that there is nor international organizations providing assistance in the area. That means that they are the municipalities governed by the HDP party that have hosted more than 98.000 refugees, without having resources for dealing with such a numbers.
Solidarity with Kobane
The EL also request the withdrawal of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) of the European Union's list of terrorist organizations and from all the other countries, as has been reflected in the EL resolution of solidarity with the Turkish people. The PKK in the border Turkey are the most actively involved in helping the resistance of Kobane.
The vice president of the EL and Portuguese MEP Marisa Matias, and the EL Treasurer and member of the leadership of Die Linke, Diether Dehm, were responsible for reading the resolution of the Party of the European Left in the concentration of solidarity with Kobane held November 1st , in the centre of Athens. The concentration was part of an initiative of international solidarity which took place in other cities around the world.
The resolution expressed the solidarity of the EL with the Kurdish people in the North of Syria and Iraq, "who are fighting for democracy, right to self-determination and women’s rights. We fully support this struggle." sentenced the resolution. It also condemned the brutal repression carried out by the Turkish Government against Kurds who were demonstrating their solidarity with their Syrian and Iraqis brothers and sisters in. The repression of the Turkish police caused dozens of deaths.
Kobane, as explained Eyyup Doru, is an important symbol of the left in the region, an example of absolute equality of women and men, of participatory democracy and the struggle for right to self-determination. That is why they want to put an end to it, with the economical support or laissez-faire attitude of the great powers. If the Islamic Army takes Kobane, the kurdish resistance will be geographically divided and weakened, he warned.
The representative of the People's Democratic Party (HDP) in Europe spoke of the situation in Kobane, the democracy autonomic project of Rojava, of the political and geostrategical scenery of Kurdistan and the interests of the Eastern and Western powers to prevent the determination of an area so rich and strategic in natural resources.
