On Friday night, during the public act of closure of the electoral campaign of Izquierda Unida in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Island), the public and candidates who were at the rally suffered several attacks. The aggressors broke posters, threw insults and went on to the physical violence.

They shouted “fascist, sexist and homophobic” slogans and caused some injures to the responsible of communication of IUC and the Federal leader of IU Enrique Santiago, the lawyer who legally coordinates legal actions undertaken by IU, at the federal level, in several cases of corruption of the Popular Party (PP).

This is "one step further" in the escalation of violence against IU, detected for the last months, along with the recent attack, in full campaign, on the headquarters of IU-Aragon in Zaragoza, the action against federal headquarters in Madrid, last April, or to the physical aggression against the Political Secretary of the Communist Youth (UJCE) in Castile y Leon.

The Party of the European Left is very concerned by the resurrection of fascism in Europe in different forms, as well as a continued growth of the extreme right in some countries of the EU.
