The Party of the European Left remains opposed to any military intervention in Syria.

We condemn the crimes committed against the Syrian people for two years now and demand the truth about the use of chemical weapons and the presentation of evidence at the United Nations.

Faced with these atrocities, we must not let emotion prevail over reason: the bombs will never save any Syrian lives. They would endanger all the people of a region already under tension, because of the game plan of the major powers is which aimed at doing anything to preserve their geopolitical interests.

The voices against the war are growing: Ban Ki Moon, Pope Francois, the British Parliament, Herman Van Rompuy ... Polls indicate that the peoples of Europe are opposed. All this sounds like a call to reason of the warmongers of the U.S. and French governments.

Under these conditions the duty of the international community is to revive the political process and to seek peace at any price. Catheri ne Ashton must be the bearer of the war opposition of the Europeans, and act on behalf of the EU for a political solution.

Russia proposes the international control of Syrian chemical weapons and their destruction. This proposal is recognized by the United States and the Syrian regime, supported by China and Iran and can be a first step to pave the way for a political solution.

The UN, through the voice of its secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon, is ready to supervise the destruction of chemical weapons. This is the path that must be taken to achieve a political solution through the organization of an international peace conference, and allow the end of violence and democracy for the Syrian people.
