The Party of the European Left welcomes a final judgment rendered by the Constitutional Court of Moldova which ruled as unconstitutional the bill banning communist symbols, the hammer and sickle, and introducing penalties on their use.

This judgment is historic both for the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova and for the entire international left movement. It is everyone’s victory! Such a result would have been impossible without political struggle, without due resistance from the Moldovan communists, without the international solidarity.

We condemn the ongoing attempts by the anti-people regime in Moldova to limit the freedom of expression, the civil rights and freedoms. The oppositional NIT TV channel still remains closed down, the vast majority of mass media in Moldova are concentrated in hands of oligarchs in power.

We demand from the Moldovan authorities to stop antidemocratic arbitrariness, to roll back antipopular experiments in education, healthcare, welfare fields, infringing upon rights and interests of millions of people.

In a situation when the people’s trust to the authorities in Moldova dropped to its historical minimum, citizens shall be provided with the right to decide further destiny for themselves and their country.

We demand the fastest restoration in Moldova of a genuine democracy, and strict observance by the ruling coalition of all the commitments undertaken by Moldova to the Council of Europe.
