Alexis Tsipras and Marisa Matías protested with the people of Portugal against the dictatorship of the markets

Once again, “Grândola, Vila Morena”, the song of José Afonso, was chosen by the protesters to start the parade that marked the 39th anniversary of April 25, 1974. The austerity measures imposed on the country by the government and the President of the Republic were the target of popular discontent. Thousands of people of all ages claimed the rescue of the ideals of the Carnation Revolution.

Last weekend, the Executive Board of the Party of the European Left gave its full support to the demonstrations of the 39th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, which in the last two years became also demonstrations against another dictatorship, the one of the financial markets.

The vice-president of the Party of the European Left and president of Syriza, Alexis Tsipras, participated in the demonstration, following an invitation of the Left Bloc, together with the EL vice-president and MEP Marisa Matias and the coordinators of the Left Bloc Catarina Martins and João Semedo. They held a banner that said "United against austerity” calling to the people of Europe to fight back together the brutal austerity measures.
