On the occasion of its meeting in Athens, in 27 March 2013, the Presidium of the European Left wishes to express its solidarity to the Cypriot people and to their fight against the imposition of a Memorandum of austerity.
Public Statement of the Presidium of the Party of the European Left
1. The developments in Cyprus signal a new phase in the EU, characterized by an even more violent escalation of neoliberal authoritarianism, against democracy and popular sovereignty. The decision for Cyprus is probably the new universal plan for all over-indebted Eurozone states. The NO of the Cypriot Parliament, which came in contrast with the submissive stance of the new right-wing President, Anastasiades, was brutally attacked by the EU and the troika, which even demanded that the next decision should be approved without a parliamentary vote.
2. At the same time, the decision for Cyprus is socially and economically catastrophic: predictions speak about a “violent adoptation” of Cypriot people to misery, through the loss of 20% of the Cypriot GDP in the next six months.
3. The sudden “decisiveness” of the EU leadership to fight against money laundering is hyprocritical. If the EU leadership really wished to fight money laundering and tax fraud, they should have accepted the yearly demands of the European Left and the social movements for the termination of tax heavens and off-shore companies, and the imposition of taxes on capital circulation.
4.
The escalation of the neoliberal offensive in the name of “europeanism” pushes more and more people to chauvinism, right-wing extremism and “anti-political” populism. The European Left stands firmly against the destruction of Europe, operated by the EU leadership and the neoliberal national governments and escalates its struggle for the formation of a European social and political front of resistance and alternative. The NO of the Cypriot Parliament already creates a rupture in the mainstream narration that there is no alternative. The fight for the restoration of democracy, social justice and popular sovereignty must now escalate. In this direction, the EL supports the demand of the Cypriot people to decide on whether they wish to be submitted to the Memorandum of destruction or not through a referendum.Athens, 27/3/2013
