Facing the murder of the general secretary of the Party of the Unified Democrats, member of the Tunisian front of Left-wing, Chokri Belaïd, the Party of the European Left expresses its firmest condemnation and sends its condolences to his family.
This crime committed against a representative of the Tunisian secular left confirms the threats that exist in Tunisia on the constitutional state and the democracy.
The government of 'technocrats' proposed by the prime minister is not what Tunisia needs. It requires fair elections, where the left could express itself freely, allowing the Tunisian society to recover its motor role in the future of the country.
The Party of the European Left supports the people of Tunisia that have taken the streets to repudiate this murder and to ask for freedom. We are with the Tunisian workers and the political parties of the left in their struggle.
