Following the coup attempt, the EL firmly opposes the brutal attack on the sovereign government of Ecuador and all foreign intervention in the internal policy of that country.
We also express absolute solidarity and support for democracy, the Ecuadorian people and its legitimately elected government and president.  We cannot avoid relating this coup attempt against a country that has chosen an anti-imperialist and anti-neoliberal policy, with the movement that overthrew President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya.
As a result of the coup, a pro-US government was installed in Honduras and the same could happen in Ecuador, as that is what such forces do to people and governments that reject their submission.
Latin America has largely cast off its history of submission to the United States that stunted democracy and development. Nevertheless, its people and the international community must remain vigilant: Honduras, Paraguay, Ecuador… we cannot allow that these countries and others are continuously threatened by coup attempts.
Democracy in Honduras must be restored; we must support Correa and also Lugo despite our differences, to restore the position of Piedad Cordoba. Fidel, Raul, Chávez, Correa, and many others are all part of the Latin American left, a reality that the US and neoliberalism will seek to ruin.
