The peace movements from all over the world desire to deepen and to broaden their cooperation. That is what they pointed out in the final resolution of their conference. Introducing the declaration, Reiner Braun, member of the international prep-group out of 25 organizations, characterized it as “internationally” and “visionary”.  And further: “We want a world without poverty, hunger, social injustice and destroyed nature. In a dialectical way: a fair world is only possible with peace, on the contrary, justice is impossible without peace. And for both, human and woman rights are a essential part.”
On the conference of the movements, UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon explained his goal for the NPT-conference starting two days later: the convention on the abolition of all nuclear weapons. Ban Ki-moon reminded Article IV of the Nonproliferation Treaty which demands negotiations on the complete and general disarmament under international control. He underlined: “These negations are long overdue” and he called on all countries, particularly the nuclear weapon states, “to fulfill this obligation.”
Since the failure of the NPT conference in 2005, recent politicians who are interested in the disarmament have learned that without movements’ pressure world will move into the abyss. Ban Ki-moon openly thanked peace movements for its courage and commitment despite reversals and backlashes.
In the 2nd of May more than 10 000 committed activists from the US and all parts of the world – 1 600 came exclusively from Japan and 250 from France – marched in a colorful demonstration from Times Square to the UN Headquarters.
After a while I watched the demonstration from the roadside, holding the EL flag. And I have never received so many presents on a demonstration: 15 cranes, folded with colorful paper from the size of a thumb up to the size of a hand, each one was unique and original; two bookmarks with artificial folded objects, two hand painted postcards. Each piece of these miniatures of art were given by peace activists from Japan. Presents were also the heartily welcomes, the greetings by peace-signs and so many thanks! Thanks for coming the whole way from Europe, thanks for the support.
A wonderful gift was the interest in the EL and last but not least the hugs of comrades from France and Belgium, members of the EL. The world can be and become so friendly!
