Since then we have been living under the threat of nuclear weapons with the capacity to destroy the planet, environment, seas and continents, animals and to eradiate the human species as a whole. As succinctly put in the 1955 Russel-Einstein Manifesto: “Here, then, is the problem which we present to you, stark and dreadful and inescapable: Shall we put an end to the human race; or shall mankind renounce war?”
Mankind still does not renounce war, but at long last the vision of a world without nuclear weapons is becoming an issue on the international level, not least at the 2010 NPT conference in New York. The international NGO conference “For a Nuclear-Free, Peaceful, Just and Sustainable World” will give impulse to ideas on how to transform a vision into reality. Peace movements all over the world will demonstrate their strength and courage to achieve our aims - NO NUKES!

The Party of the European Left is part of the peace movement and is struggling for a world without any nuclear bombs, no strategic and no tactical bombs, and no mini-nukes.

  • We are convinced that abolition is the only path to nuclear security;
  • We are engaged in campaigns for the withdrawal of all US nukes from Europe;
  • We demand the closure of all NATO and US bases in Europe;
  • We are opposing all plans to modernise atomic weapons and their carrier systems;
  • We are struggling for nuclear-free zones.

We oppose the logic of military blocs, including attempts to create European military structures. We completely reject the first strike nuclear strategy of the NATO and will protest to strengthen our long-term demand for the dissolution of NATO at the next NATO summit 19-21 November in Lisbon, Portugal.
The War on Terror in Afghanistan must end. If this is not achieved, this war will become permanent. Afghanistan needs a new freedom strategy, not a new war strategy.
The road to a solution is not civil and military, but civil instead of military. Peace will have a chance when all foreign troops are removed from Afghanistan. We do not consider war and militarization to be political instruments and want a strategy where security for all is guaranteed. Disarmament and the conversion of military industries are pivotal tasks.
More than ever, security must be based on the principles of peace and security, disarmament, conflict solution by political and civil means conforming to international law and to the principles of a reformed and democratised UN system. Such a collective system will also guarantee security and improvements in energy security, the environment and human rights.
