The EL is very concerned about the tendency in Europe to revise electoral rules and the parliamentary representation system in favour of established majorities and against a pluralistic representation of the society.

Electoral rules have to guarantee the largest representation of the political, social and cultural realities of the continent.

That is why the EL is in favour of fully proportional electoral laws and rejects the establishment of barriers of minimum percentage. Representation in the European Parliament should result only and directly from votes obtained in elections and not from artificial administrative distortions of the citizens’ will.

Until today the process of the European construction and integration has been facing difficulties and a crisis of legitimacy resulting from its neoliberal nature and a deficit of democracy.

Right now, while the powers of the Parliament are increasing, though insufficiently, electoral rules restricting representation would seriously affect pluralism.

The EL demands a democratic mobilization in favour of pluralism and fights against further restrictions of democracy.
