The EL welcomes the initiative of Dimitris Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat, leaders of the two communities, for this symbolic step which gives hope to the rapprochement of the two communities in Cyprus.

All Cypriots have welcomed this opening with enthusiasm. It gives them new hope and strength to keep on working for the reunification of Cyprus. This is also a message to the international community who should support all efforts made by the Cypriots to find a solution by themselves. We encourage and will support all political steps in search of a solution for the reunification of the island within the framework of a bicommunal-bizonal federation, according to the UN resolutions.
