The documents present the main tasks for the 400.000 members of the EL in face of the European Eletcions in 2009.
With big delegations from all EL member and observer parties, other organisations, initiatives, individuals and international guests coming from over 30 countries the 2nd EL Congress was an important step in developing the cooperation between the Left forces.
Next to the newly elected Executive Board, which consists of two delegates from each member party, the 2nd EL Congress elected Lothar Bisky from DIE LINKE (Germany) as its new Chairperson together with Graziella Mascia from Rifondazione Comunista (Italy) as Vice-Chairperson. Pedro Marset was re-elected as Treasurer of the EL.
The European Left wants to participate with a united platform in the elections for the European Parliament in 2009. As the newly elected President Lothar Bisky states: “ The main demands must be the same – wether in Rome, Berlin, Prague, Paris or Warsaw. That’s what we have to fight for.”
The EL says NO to the EU reform treaty decided by the leading head of states in Lisbon. Bisky accused the arrogance of the head of states in view of the referenda in France and the Netherlands: “They think the European Union is their Weekend House, and they can do with it whatever they want. But that is an fatal error.“
Further on he stated that the EL is against a Europe of governments. The European Left is fighting for a Europe where the citizens decide on their social and political rights. That is clearly stated in the theses of the 2nd EL Congress. With a common campaign the EL will demand for referenda in all European countries.
The aim for the EL in face of the Elections in 2009 is to develop alternatives and to formulate concrete proposals. “Peace is the forefront of the social question” states Bisky. “The European Union doesn’t need an agency for rearmament. The planned so called „Anti-missile-shield in the Czech Republic and Poland is provoking a new wave of rearmament. The EU needs a culture of peace.”
