The Party of the European Left expresses its deepest concern about the offensive against the peace agreements that Colombia is facing. In this offensive, extreme right groups and some military officials have killed a number of peasant leaders which is growing alarmingly: 71 of them were killed this year alone and five of them only this November.
This series of murders, also accompanied by threats, disappearances and harassment, is a clear action of intimidation against peacekeepers and against those who could claim justice and the right to land.
It is also about the actions of peace enemies who try to install a climate of political crisis that would prevent the implementation of the agreements that have just been negotiated.
The Party of the European Left condemns these murders and joins the voices calling for a punishment against the perpetrators and expresses all its solidarity and support to the social and political forces that demand the dismantling of the paramilitary groups, the respect for the agreements, the implementation of guarantees for the free exercise of political rights and protection for those who wish to build a future of justice and lasting peace.
