The Party of the European Left has known with bitter regret the death of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.

First of all, we wish to express our support and solidarity to his family, the people of Cuba, and the Cuban Communist Party.

Fidel Castro has been and will be one of the most important political figures of the worldwide left. His struggle for peace, social justice, solidarity and equality among human beings is an example for all of us.

His internationalist vision in his fight against capitalism and imperialism has succeeded, both in Latin America and in the rest of the world, being a fundamental reference for the leftist organizations which are working for a radically different society, as we are.

He was not only a revolutionary and military strategist but also a great intellectual revolutionary whose work is recognized for its content and the great capacity to analyze the future and give alternatives at a global level.

The Party of the Left Europe will participate in the tributes that are going to be made in its memory in the next few days and is mourning, along with the Cuban people, claiming the legacy of Fidel Castro, an irreplaceable person in the history of the worldwide left.

Today more than ever we want to mention one of his great quotations at a time when the world is especially convulsed. "The planet is weaker and more polluted. Please always think of achieving a true peace that suits us all, children, grandchildren, human beings, we are all going to thank them"
