The Party of the European Left strongly condemns the murder of Berta Cáceres, coordinator of the Council of Indigenous Peoples of Honduras (Consejo de los pueblos Indígenas de Honduras). This heinous and cowardly crime is an attempt to silence the voice of a determined and combative militant who for years was devoted to defending the rights of indigenous communities and to environmental protection.

Berta Cáceres was one of the organizers of the resistance against the reactionary forces who carried out the coup against President Juan Manuel Zelaya. For his commitment and action she was persecuted, imprisoned and threatened with death several times.

Berta Cáceres was murdered in the time she was organizing new struggles to defend the right to life of indigenous communities and to preserve their land from the brutal exploitation of natural resources by large companies with the complicity of the Honduras government.

The Party of the European Left honors this social activist and exemplary leader that was Berta Caceres, and shares the sadness of the communities for which it expresses its solidarity. With them, the EL demands an end to impunity and pledges justice against the material and intellectual authors of this crime.
