"We want us alive" has been the motto of the banner with which the Party of the European Left (EL) has participated today, November 7, in the national demonstration that against gender-based violence which crossed the centre of Madrid for more than 3 hours, bringing together hundreds of thousands of people, arriving from the whole country in a playful and vindictive day.
The delegation of the EL has been headed by its Vice President Maite Mola, who has valued the huge participation in a call for such an important issue as the equality of women very positively "who had never been on the frontline of the claims. Today a step forward has been taken that shows that the Spanish society has evolved from the classical claims to demands of vanguard. Today Spain has become a country of reference at the global level. Today we know that the feminists, along with all the partners who share our struggles, we are capable of going out to the streets and occupy them”.
In the EL-delegation also Anne Asabourin, of the French Communist Party, Brigitte Berthouzoz of the Labour Party of Switzerland and Aliki Patsou of Syriza have participated.
Maite Mola explained that the EL is a parity party that has always very actively supported all the claims in favour of gender equality. In fact, during the whole year it has been running a European campaign for decent work for women. Last year it has also made another very strong European campaign in favour of free abortion, at the time when the government of the Popular Party in Spain was proposing the reform of the abortion act – they would have done it if they would not have had to yield to the popular pressure – that would have forced women to abort in hiding or abroad, as in the dictatorship time.
Today the Party of the European Left has gone out to the streets to denounce the machos’ murders against the women, who in Spain, in the last 10 years, have led to the death of 1.378 women. Only this year, the feminist movement has taken into account 83 murdered women, who are not only those who have died at the hands of their partners or former partners, but also the daughters, family and prostitutes.
Among the claims of the over 400 convening organizations of this demonstration is that the macho crimes are to be considered a state issue, criticising the cut of 26% of the budgets devoted to policies to combat it. This call also joined 122 municipalities which passed a motion supporting the demonstration of the 7-N.
