Statement on Cuba, after the Donald Trump's declaration

In front of the statements of the US President Donald Trump, held in Miami, the Party of the European Left, once again, demands an end to the genocidal blockade of the United States against the Cuban people, a blockade that is the main obstacle to Cuba's economic development.

In accordance with international law, the negotiations of other nations with Cuba should be based on full respect for sovereignty, on equal conditions and without interference in Cuban internal affairs. The return of the Guantanamo Naval Base is an essential condition in that regard.

From the EL we recognize that Cuba is a country that has shown great solidarity at an international level, both in Africa and in Latin American countries, with Cuban doctors in the confrontation of Ebola and the recognized work of the contingent against Disasters of the Henry Reeves brigade, present in many parts of the world, such as Angola, Haiti, Chile, Pakistan or Guatemala, always present when the international community has requested humanitarian aid.

And lastly, we want to point out that Cuba has neither constituted nor will ever constitute a threat to US security, so we reiterate our support to the Cuban Revolution while at the same time sympathizing with the people of Cuba who are suffering mainly the attacks on their freedom and independence by the United States.

Maite Mola, Vice President of the Party of the European Left
