Go to newsThe Party of the European Left expresses its deep sorrow at the death of the extraordinary humanist that was the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano
Eduardo Galeano defined himself as a writer who wanted to contribute to the rescue of the kidnapped memory of all America, but especially Latin America’s memory, a land that he said was despised and endearing.
Eduardo was a man committed to his ideas brilliantly expressed in words which he knew how to communicate with the familiarity of a Latin American friend. This was, as he said, to improve the silence. Eduardo Galeano was the spokesman of the people that felt hopeless due to injustice, oppression and lack of freedom, and who had much to say to the great power centers of the world.
It would be unfair only to remember Eduardo as the political activist and author of books and articles that have left a deep imprint on the veins through which flows the Latin American and Latin Americanist blood. There was another Eduardo that, after a serene and subtle irony pause, also the saw inner misery of the human being. But that Eduardo was never pessimistic but, on the contrary, made use of that knowledge of human nature to shore up our virtues, our ability to fight and always search for the final victory.
The Party of the European Left echoes a phrase from Eduardo Galeano that summarizes his positive view of History: "There is one place where past and present meet and recognize and embrace each other. That place is tomorrow."
Farewell Eduardo!
!Hasta siempre Eduardo!
