The Party of the European Left condemns the massacre on Garissa Campus at the Kenyan University committed by Al Shaba band expresses its deepest concern on the very dangerous situation the whole region is living at this time.

The instability created in Yemen by the progress of the terrorist groups with the involvement of the Saudi Arabian Army; the worsening of the war in Syria with the presence of all types of armed forces and with the massacre on the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmuk (Damascus); the progress of the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and other surrounding countries; the unstable situation in the Lebanon frontier; the difficulties in getting a firm and solid international compromise on the nuclear use and plans of Iran; the aggression of Israel against Palestine; the situation in Libya…show a scenario of alarm and danger for the entire world.

From that things have evolved in a risky and worsening spiral. Instead of foster rational and democratic commitments between the different parts, the US and the EU have placed the focus of attention on the neocolonial interest and in the arms race.

It has to be accepted the dramatic failure of both, the US and the EU, in facing the problems of the whole region. And one of the side effects of this failure has been that thousands young European Muslims from the EU are joining the so-called Jihad in Syria and other places.

Those are the reason why we are demanding a deep change in the international strategy on the region in order to have better perspectives. It is not mainly a question of military solutions but on the contrary, of social and political understanding that shall lead to a road map of gradual peace based on common ground in defence of human rights. A ground that might allow that political situation could be build under the rules of democracy and global satisfaction of social needs.
