Go to newsThe EL denounces U.S. interventionism when declaring that Venezuela is a "national security threat"
The Party of the European Left (EL) considers that US president Barack Obama decision to qualify Venezuela as “a threat to the national security” is only one more manoeuvre to justify its imperialist interventionism.
This qualification, along with the sanctions against Venezuela, reminds the black years of coup d’états and military dictatorships in Latin American countries. With the excuse of the defence of "national security" the United States has destabilized the legitimately constituted governments, by establishing and supporting bloody dictatorships in Central and South America, what they considered the US backyard.
It is untenable that a country thousands of miles from Washington, without strategic weapons and without resources or intention to attack United States, may be a threat to the Northern power. Just remember that only a year ago the CELAC countries declared the region as a Zone of Peace.
The EL, as already did UNASUR last Friday, reiterates the absolute defence of democratic continuity in Venezuela and its full support to the legitimate Government of President Nicolas Maduro.
No one has the right to intervene in the internal affairs of a sovereign State or to declare it, without any basis, as a threat to its national security.
The Party of the European Left demands to the US Government and the European institutions to stop economic, social and political destabilization of the country. It also calls on the Venezuelan political opposition to respect the democratic rules and allow people to freely decide their future in the upcoming elections.
