II Mediterranean Conference of the LEFT concluded, February 22nd, with a declaration that, in addition to offering an exhaustive analysis of the complex situation in which the countries of the Mediterranean are, it marks the common positions and the beginning of coordinated action of the gathered parties.

The statement made clear that only a radical change of the dominant social and economic order can give an answer to the question of social justice that grows in the North and South of the Mediterranean.

Some of the objectives are having a Mediterranean free of nuclear weapons and free from military bases of NATO, as well as the defence and protection of the environment and the common good, like water and all public services, that should be under democratic and popular control. It also materialized a roadmap with the alternatives posed by the left of the two sides of the Mediterranean in issues such as Palestine, the Sahara, Cyprus and the Kurdish people.

In this sense, II Mediterranean Conference of the LEFT proclaimed its support for the recognition of civil and human rights in the region as a whole, as well as to the struggles to end the occupation, that still exists around the Mediterranean, defending the right of self-determination of peoples.

The three days meeting closed with the conviction that has been a step forward between the cooperation of the political organizations of the left of the two shores of the Mediterranean. They consolidated the commitment to strengthen "the cooperation between our parties, youth organizations and women, trade unions and social activists, artists, intellectuals". Everybody congratulated for the hope that the victory of Syriza in Greece represent for everybody, as well as the Kurdish example of resistance against ISIL and liberating Kobane.

During the Conference in Istanbul, the participants discussed the left alternatives for the region, strategies of popular struggles against austerity and poverty policies imposed by the international financial institutions, growth, social justice, ecology and socialism, on migrations, refugees and freedom of movement with equal rights to everybody. Also about the reactionary forces and reactionary ideologies (religious, fundamentalism, extreme and popular right) as a danger to democracy an tools to split the societies.

The result reflected in this statement is to join the fight against racism and xenophobia and reactionary forces, in support of the civil and human rights of all migrants, for the secularism and against racial, religious and gender discrimination. Also it was made clear that the issue is not a clash of civilizations, as the imperialism attempts to provoke, but a struggle of classes, both at national and international level.

The next month of March, during the World Social Forum, which this year is to be held in Tunis, it will begin the preparation for the III  Mediterranean Conference of the LEFT organized by the Party of the European Left.
