Go to newsThe EL participated in Istanbul in the demonstration against the repressive security draft of law of the Turkish Government
The Party of the European Left (EL), represented among others by two of its vice-presidents, Maite Mola and Marisa Matías, joined the demonstration summoned yesterday, in Istanbul, by the Turkish left, in protest against the draft of Law of National Security the Turkish conservative government of the AKP, the party of Erdogan, wants to approve in the Parliament.
If this were approved, the police will have full power to arrest and shoot in the street to anyone with the face partially covered, even with winter clothing. The preventive detention, without justification, would be extended to 48 hours and the government would increase its capacities to declare states of emergency, with the violation of civil and human rights.
If the police founds a person with a slingshot, even if hasn´t been used, that person may be condemned to five years in prison, and if it is a firearm is to 2 years.
This law further reinforces the already strong power of the police that during the past few months has killed more than 50 people during the demonstrations carried out in support of the struggle of the Kurds in Kobane.
The project is now in procedure. The positive element is that the opposition increases in the streets and in the Parliament, where this week deputies of Kurdish party HDP and of the CHP were physically beaten in the National Assembly by the deputies of the party of the government.
The security law, promoted by the Turkish President Erdogan and the first Minister, aims to prevent popular anti-Government protests like those of the Gezi Park in 2013 and those of the Kurds, in October 2014, against the refusal of the Turkish Government of supporting the Syrian Kurds in their struggle against the ISIS in Kobane
Members of different parties of the EL participated in the demonstration, which went through center town. The co-Chair of the Turkish ODP, Bilge Seçkin, greeted the unification of left that is being built and that can achieve the withdrawal of the draft law, in addition to mark a strategy of work.
