The Party of the European Left welcomes the victory of Salvador Sánchez Ceren, candidate of the Frente Farabundo Marti de Liberación Nacional in the presidential elections of this March 9. The elections were carried out with all the transparency, and in the presence of a large number of international observers. The EL Party was present in these elections with an observer.
The Electoral Supreme Court published the results of 100% of the votes, even though it has not declared a definitive result given the narrow difference between the results of the candidate of the FMNL and those of Norman Quijano, candidate of the Nationalistic Republican Alliance, the far right party that devastated the country with its politics between 1992 and 2009.
After having put forward a campaign of fear and of discrediting against the candidate of the FMLN, Norman Quijano embarks on a campaign which ignores the results of this election and launched open threats against the legitimacy of the ballot. Extremely worrying is the reference made by the right-wing candidate to a supposed support in their favour of a part of the Salvadoran army. It is not possible to ignore the relations of this party with the “Squadrons of Death” that terrified the Salvadorans in the not-too-distant past.
The EL Party denounces any attempt of destabilization by the right that defends the interest of the old oligarchy and of certain business sectors.
The EL Party transmits all its entire solidarity and its warm congratulations to the people of El Salvador and the FMLN in these so important moments for the future of this country.
The election of Salvador Sánchez Ceren will give continuity to the politics of human development and reduction of the levels of poverty initiated in 2009, and announces new advances in the construction of the unity of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
