On the 17th of January, the PP in Burgos announced the closure of the works carried on in the Boulevard and Monday it will bring street Vitoria back to its original state. For Burgo’s United Left (Izquierda Unida), has been a three-fold victory: A victory of democracy over the antidemocratic and patronizing behavior of the PP towards popular will. A victory of the people over the hidden interests and links between the banks, construction industry and the PP. A victory of those who chose to organize themselves and act not believing that oligarchic powers cannot be fought and convinced that politics is the best mean for change. Resistance and social protests of Gamoral’s neighboring areas have shown that the PP had not discussed nor agreed with the locality about the project and that it has therefore consistently lied by stating the contrary. Such social uprising and the organizing of the people against the project, has demonstrated at the local and national levels the inability of the PP Government to govern. It has furthermore highlighted the non-democratic ways of the PP and the Major and brought to light that when unable to obtain what they want through ordinary channels, they seek to impose it through political force by keeping in check and repress social expressions. This shows that in Spain political power is subordinated to the economic one, missing those times when the police and the army were not at the service of the people but an instrument to keep social order for the rich. The victory obtained by the citizens of Gamonal cannot end here, it needs to be the spark for social mobilization in a continuous form against the violence imposed by the system: 18.000 unemployed of which half do not receive any subsidy; evictions; wealth is concentrated in the hands of the few while hardship extends to our city; the in-existence of active employment policies and investment in productive capacity; a precarious job market; privatization and uncertain social services, … There is need for a new common consciousness for the people, grounded in the belief that it is possible to have an alternative country coherent with people’s interests, but above all that it is possible to defeat politics that only benefit the few and damage the most. We wish for no place to exist where our voice is not heard, not as a symbol, but as an effective movement, organized and urgent, that empowers society and unites in joint vindications. We need to work for a constituent process in the country that redefines the political roots at the service of the people.
