The Party of the European Left welcomes the election of Michelle Bachelet, candidate of the coalition "New Majority" for the presidency. The results show the magnitude of the rejection of the pinochetist right in power since 2009 and the desire for change of the Chileans.
 

The government of the "New Majority" will face major challenges to meet the requirements that have been expressed during the struggle years that have just passed: a free and public education, the adoption of a new constitution to replace the one left by the dictatorship, fiscal reform, the adoption of legislation favourable to workers and the end of precariousness, the recognition of the rights of the Mapuche people.

The EL congratulates the Chilean people, all the progressive forces in the country, which are the origin of a program that should be implemented and that has made ​ the victory possible.
