The Party of the European Left honours, in this 40th anniversary of the coup d’état, the President Salvador Allende and activists for freedom and emancipation which made the experience of the Popular Unity possible.

While this far-reaching democratic experience made allowed profound changes in the Chilean society to happen and the successive elections confirmed the growing popular support with the Left government, the Chilean oligarchy, in complicity with the US government decided to put an end by a highly violent coup d’état with a government that was the proof of the possibility of change, starting from the institutional framework, shaped by the history of the Chilean people.

Today, the peoples of Latin America have are carrying the torch as the Popular Unity did 40 years ago and are bringing policies to life that aim at the same goals of sovereignty, justice and democracy.

The Party of the European Left expresses its solidarity with the Chilean people and their struggles, with the Left forces, which will face the right-wing heiress of pinochetism in the upcoming presidential elections in November. A victory for the progressive forces will pave the way for necessary changes to put an end to limited democracy and the neoliberal model with the adoption of a new Constitution that will replace the one imposed by the dictatorship.
