Go to newsThe EL in support and solidarity with the six workers of Telefónica in their 13th day of hunger strike
The executive board of the EL, meeting in Copenhagen the 17th of November 2012, has been informed by its member party EUiA from Catalonia (Spain), the serious situation of 6 workers of the multinational company Telefónica, S.L., in their 13th day of hunger strike as an extreme form of protest because of the unjust dismissal of a worker: Marcos Andrés.
This exceptional measure sustained by Marcos and five more comrades in solidarity with his legitimate claim, highlights and denounces a case of a determined effort against the workers' rights and against justice, through brutal cuts of the countereform in the labour segment.
Marcos was fired for filing several sick leaves, in all correction and with all justification. This elemental act was put forward as a reason by his superiors for his dismissal. The courts did justice to his claims and Marcos was readmitted due to the annulment of his dismissal, but a subsequent revision typified it only as « out of order » and the company fired him, with a ridiculous compensation.
For all this, the present EL Executive Board:
1. Expresses all its support and solidarity with Marcos and the workers in hunger strike.
2. Denounces the severity of the situation, spreads and extends the present information in view of the opacity and guilty silence of the big media.
3. Desires, urges and hopes for the quick – already urgent – resolution of the conflict which only ceases with the immediate readmission of Marcos Andrés, by Telefonica S.L., and the subsequent end of the hunger strike, before irreparable damages occur.
