Go to newsExecutive board of the EL in Athens: The rise of the Left is a hope for all European peoples
The Party of European Left met this weekend in Athens, hosted by Syriza. Its 28 member parties and 10 observers saluted the dazzling rise of their Greek partners and, more generally, the progression of the Left in several EU countries, such as the Front de gauche in France.
The positions of the Left are strengthened. Forces of the EL in their country and the EL at European level can not be ignored. It is a hope and an opportunity for all the resistances to austerity. The possibility of a political alternative for a new construction of Europe, in solidarity, serving the people and democracy, grows.
The EL has refined its emergency proposals: a European conference and a moratorium on the public debts to prevent their deterioration and determine their real volume, as well as measures of banking regulation. It defined its concept for a new kind of growth: based on a better distribution of wealth between capital and labor, fiscal justice and deep changes in the banking and financial system.
Actions will be implemented in all countries to prevent the ratification of the dangerous fiscal pact and fight against egoistic views promoted by the extreme right.
With a citizens' committee composed of politicians, trade unionists and members of social and cultural movements, the EL registered at the European Commission, a European Citizens' Initiative for the creation of a European public bank dedicated exclusively to social and ecological development, and solidarity. In September, a major campaign for the collection of one million signatures across the EU, will begin.
Continuously engaged with social movements and trade union forces, the EL will actively participate in the initiative "Florence + 10" in November and in the initiation of an "alternative summit" process, that will take place during the first half of 2013.
