Solidarity Message to the Cypriot People

Thirty eight years after the NATO planned double crime executed against Cyprus and its people as a whole - the fascist coup d’etat and Turkish invasion carried out respectively on 15 and 20 July 1974 – the island and its people remain divided, and Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots continue to suffer its serious consequences. Despite insistive efforts, Turkey’s intransigence has been blocking the achievement of an agreed solution. The continuing guided influx of thousands of settlers from Turkey aimed at changing the demographic structure and at the assimilation of the Turkish Cypriot community. This expansionist policy puts in direct danger the identity and very existence of the Turkish Cypriot community.
The participants of the Party of the European Left Executive Board Meeting held in Athens on 14 -15 July, 2012, reiterate their solidarity to the Cypriot people as a whole - Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots - and their support to the struggle for the reunification of Cyprus and its people according to the UN Resolutions and 1977 and 1979 High-Level Agreements, under a bizonal bicommunal federation, with single sovereignty, single citizenship and single international personality, with the fundamental freedoms and rights guaranteed for all Cypriots.
The Republic of Cyprus, as of July 1st, is the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Turkey continues to launch threats and cause provocations against Cyprus including in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus, what constitutes an unacceptable behaviour and one violating International Law. At the same time, Turkey states that it would not talk to the Presidency of the Council as long as Cyprus holds this presidency. This is an unacceptable stand particularly as it comes from a country applying to become a member of the EU.
The complex situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East is extremely worrying and we express support to the struggle to make Cyprus a bridge of cooperation and peace between the countries and peoples of the region.
