Yesterday, the parliamentary elections in Greece were marked by a spectacular defeat of the member parties of the "coalition of national unity" - including PASOK and New Democracy - who inflicted the Greek people, with a rare violence, the austerity measures demanded by markets, employers and leadership of the EU. This is an important political turning point that must be heard in Greece and throughout Europe.
Whatever government emerges from the negotiations, its mandate has been defined with great clarity: it must challenge the memoranda and provide the means to his country to escape the clutches of the banks and financial markets.
It is no coincidence that the event of these elections is the fantastic growth of the "anti-austerity" left forces, especially the coalition" Syriza ", led by Alexis Tsipras, who became the second political force of the country and the first of the left. The Party of European Left warmly welcomes this result.
We appreciate that a line of courageous political breaking off with the austerity policies, and proposals for reorientation of the European construction reaches this level in Greece. We are pleased that the Greeks have chosen, with the ballot Syriza, the will to unite the forces fighting against austerity in Greece and choose to do so in solidarity with other European peoples.
Despite all the attacks against democracy and despair that can lead to far-right vote, the political message sent by the Greek people is very wise and clever.
It is the commitment of the EL and its member parties to strengthen solidarity and common battles with the forces that resist Greece. A new page in European history is finally open and we intend to print ecological and social progress in it.
