The Party of European Left resolutely condemns the Moldovan authorities
We regard closing down a television channel, where it was allowed to openly criticize the authorities and their representatives, as the act of intimidation of all the people who disagree with the policies promoted by the ruling regime in Moldova. It is a message for the entire society: if you aren
’ actions against mass media and freedom of expression in Moldova. Revocation of broadcasting license of NIT TV channel, one of the most popular TV channels in Moldova, is the worst violation of the civil rights and freedoms of people. Thereby, it is an attempt to put the journalists, the creative team to silence, depriving them of possibility to work and freely broadcast to air, and an attempt to deprive televiewers, citizens of the country of the right to access to information, to alternative information rather than the authorities’ official position.’t loyal to the regime and its representatives, you will be punished.

We demand the Moldovan authorities to immediately stop any arbitrariness concerning NIT TV channel, to restore its license on free broadcasting. We express our solidarity with the NIT TV channel staff. These days we also want to say the words of encouragement and support to all Moldovan people, to everyone who does not give up fighting for the rights and aspiration to live decently in the free country.
Statement by the Party of the European Left
Madrid, 21 April 2012

The European Left emphasizes that the regime, which fights with journalists and mass media, trying to close their mouth, is by definition antidemocratic one. Inactions by the Moldovan authorities in response to the international condemnation of closing down the TV channel are one more confirmation of the regime’s inadequacy. It must be admitted that full disregard of the international organizations’ opinion concerning the need to observe freedom of expression and human rights in Moldova is one of the consequences of usurpation of power by the ruling Alliance and numerous violations of the Moldovan Constitution for the recent months.
