The Party of the European Left rejects Spanish government decision to accept the antimissile shield in the naval base of Rota (Cadiz).
Profiting the fact that the Spanish Parliament has been dissolved because of advanced general elections for the 20th November, President Zapatero has decided with the support of the conservative party and without public debate to include Spain inside the NATO antimissile shield.
The military explanation given by Zapatero is the threat of missile coming from North Korea or Iran.
The social explanation is the 300 jobs that the US Navy ships in Rota can create in the region of Andalucía, with a very high unemployment rate.
The European Left considers this decision as a danger and a high risk not only for Spain but also for Europe, and goes in the same direction that the Middle East missile system in Turkey. That is why we condemn it and support the claim made by the United Left of Spain presented to the Spanish Parliament asked to cancel this NATO base.
