Despite the crackdown on the Kurdish population by the Turkish government on the Kurdish population and despite the obstructions many barriers to the expression of their political rights, independent candidates from the Bloc "Labour, Democracy and Freedom, supported by the main Kurdish party the BDP, have just won 36 seats which include 14 new ones, in the Turkish parliament.

The EL is delighted with this outcome. The Kurdish people just have sent a clear signal to Mr. Erdogan and his government: the policy of open-mindedness with the continuing violation of human rights and repression is unacceptable.  On election night, police violence was committed in Siirt, including the beating up of people celebrating the BDP victory in the streets. These practices are unworthy of a democracy.

For the EL, the rights of Kurdish people demand a peaceful political process. The Kurdish people must be heard! European governments must insist that Ankara, a candidate for entry to the EU, respect the rights of the Kurdish people and allow for freedom in Turkey.
