The death of Bin Laden was recently announced by US President following an operation conducted in the immediacies of Islamabad. Although he was a symbol of terrorism and has been responsible for the death of so many innocent people, the EL assists with indignation to his immediate execution.
Indeed, the American troops have carried out an operation with the purpose of killing and not only capturing the leader of Al-Qaeda. Contrary to what the President Obama may say, “Justice is not done”, this process represents a punitive mission, a revenge and an attempt to avoid the difficulties that would result from a capture and the guarantee of a fair trial. Once more, as has already happened with Saddam Hussein, the United States have shown what they intended by "Justice".
Therefore, the Party of the European Left condemns the execution of Osama Bin Laden, in coherence with our absolute rejection of the death penalty. We remind that if Bin Laden was a terrorist, it is the instability of the world, maintained by the system of political, military and NATO economic domination which allowed it to exist.
In addition, George Bush had exploited Al-Qaida attacks to permit the invasion of Afghanistan and especially to control pipelines in the region and the establishment of military bases at the crossroads of Russia and China.
We are still analyzing today all the harmful effects, limits and failures committed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The EL believes that the only effective long term fight against terrorism consists on the access of all peoples to independence, economic sovereignty and democracy. It is also the same politics that has contributed to the uprisings in the Arab world. It is the peoples of the Arab world today who tomorrow will be the players of democracy, human rights and justice.
Maite Mola, on behalf of EL Presidency
