The Party of the European Left states that military interventions including bombing campaigns on Tripoli and other Libyan towns will not bring peace to Libya. The military campaign and the continuous airstrikes that are rocking Tripoli by President Obama and the allied forces are devastating Libya and will not allow the popular uprising and the protection of the civilians but only acting in the sense of regaining control of the region and the resources of the country.

Forces loyal to Muammar el-Qaddafi show no sign of ending their sieges of rebel-held cities as the international attacks enter its sixth day. The Party of the European Left calls on the Europe's leaders to head into a crucial decision in today’s summit, turning over a political and diplomatic alternative to Libya and rejecting NATO’s eminent takeover of the war command at a time when Western military forces already made inoperative the country's air force and will focus on the actions on ground.

There is no military solution to the conflict in Libya, as it has been shown. The European Left supports the democratic and progressive movements in Libya. Consequently we call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire which includes the allied forces as well as Kaddafi’s troops.

The EL defends that a tangible step towards peace should be the envoy of an international political and diplomatic mission and civilian observers to Libya. Moreover, we wish to reaffirm that there is a great need for humanitarian aid to refugees inside and outside of Libya which must be granted immediately.
