The Party of the European Left expresses the deepest solidarity with the Japanese people affected by the catastrophe and calls for all possible EU assistance.

EU Energy Commissioner already referred to the nuclear incident as an apocalyptical situation out of control.

This shows that nuclear energy represents huge risks to public health and to the planet.

European Commission ordered stress tests to all EU and nearby nuclear plants. However, the EL considers that further measures must be taken.

EU must review the energy policies, exclude nuclear sources out of our energy basket and plan the closure of the existing reactors.

In the same way, public security is at stake while nuclear weapons are stored across Europe.

The public debate should be open at a broad level and the EL supports all the initiatives that are being organized to evaluate the ways for a urgent energy policy transition.
