For the U.S., the act of foreign policy making and the revealed activities of diplomatic representatives is considered a "crime" and an attack against the international community. For some people in Europe, such as Italian Foreign Affairs Minister, Franco Frattini (the same who, as Commissioner, dared to propose the installation of "sorting centres" for African immigrants), it is even a “September 11th” for world diplomacy.

The charges against Julian Assange suggest that it is forbidden for citizens to criticize, denounce or condemn the policy of their government or foreign governments.

This is a clear and serious challenge to democracy, individual and collective rights, in particular the right of access to information and the basic principles of the Rule of Law. The European Left Party will not allow such attacks against liberties.

The cause of such panic and aggressive behaviour is not the confidential character of the documents, but the light that has been shed on Western powers’ foreign policy that drives bloody conflicts in defiance of the fundamental rights of peoples to self-determination, and the need for peace and cooperation among peoples.

This world, dominated and alienated as it is by hegemonic powers, does not know another logic besides the archaic, violent and hateful: the EL will fight with all his strength so that healthy relations, cooperation and solidarity will prevail.
