A delegation of the Party of the European Left (EL), headed by its Vice-Presidents Maite Mola and Margarita Mileva, along with the President of the Portuguese Bloco de Esquerda, Catarina Martins, among others, took part in the tribute that the Left around the world pays to Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, every second Sunday of January in Berlin.

As every year, the EL delegation laid a wreath of red flowers and carnations on the tomb of the revolutionaries, located in the Cemetery of the Socialists, along with many other spartacists killed during the brutal repression that followed the thwarted Spartacist Uprising during the first days of January 1919 in Berlin.

The founders of the Spartacist League and the German Communist Party were arrested and killed on January 15, 1919. Their bodies were thrown into the River, but their thinking survives as an essential reference of socialism. They are also a reference to the anti-warmongers and opposition to imperialist wars, refusing to participate in World War I. Rosa Luxemburg, in addition to be one of the key figures of the Marxist theory is a symbol of feminism writing in favor of the emancipation and women’s rights.
