This popular resistance and the position that the democratic governments from Latin America took are increasingly weakening the illegal government of Roberto Micheletti. The recent positions of the United Nations, the Rio Group and UNASUR, as well as the UE’s and the Obama administration’s declarations, reinforce this weakening and the isolation of the group in power.
The European Left party condemns the repression with which the putschist government of Roberto Micheletti intends to depreciate the Honduran democratic movement and reiterates its absolute solidarity with the Honduran people, with the Resistance Front to the “coup d'état” and with the legitimate government of Juan Manuel Zelaya.
The European Left party also expressly condemns the attack with neurotoxin’s gases to the Embassy of Brazil, where Zelaya is sheltered, and caused severe intoxication to those inside the Diplomatic building. The EL offers its solidarity with the Brazilian government unfairly attacked by the putschists’ government that broke relations with it; this decision can only worsen the political crisis and cannot be considered an isolated event. The EU and its member states must claim the fulfilment of international laws regarding the international refugees in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa. This is the moment to take vigorous measures against those who are illegally governing the country for 3 months.

The European Left party joins the demand of democratic forces from Honduras and the continent in favour of the immediate and unconditional return to presidential functions of  Juan Manuel Zelaya. The reinstatement of democratic and legal institutions is the first condition to allow the organization of truly democratic elections and guaranty the free and sovereign expression of the people.
