At present we call upon the international community, and especially the EU, to exert effective pressure for the return to democracy and the quick reestablishment of President Zelaya and his government without any precondition. The EU must not recognise any de-facto government like the one of Micheletti. Elections that dictator Micheletti wants to call for in autumn, as well as all his acts must  be considered invalid.

The Party of the European Left welcomes the decision of the Central American countries to suspend the trade negotiations with the EU as long as democracy is not re-established in Honduras. It  alls on the EU Commission to block the aid and economic cooperation to Honduras, and to suspend the GSP trade facilities and any relation with Honduras until the rule of law is reestablished.

The European Left condemns the repression and violence exerted against opponents to the dictatorship, the assassination of several leaders of the social movements and protesters, the censorship of the press and the suspension of the fundamental liberties.

The Party of the European Left expresses its full solidarity with the struggle of the Front against the coup and the enormous majority of in favour of democracy, the return in power of the President Zelaya’s government and the support of its of reduction of poverty, democratization, demilitarization and integration of Latin America this government had undertaken, and will continue to develop as soon as it will return to power.
