The Party of the European Left will campaign for the European elections with a common electoral platform. Today the 19 member and 11 observer parties of the European Left agreed on the main topics and common political positions for the electoral campaign.
Around 170 participants attended the conference at the cinema Babylon in Berlin, and emphasized that the European Left is a pro-European party in favour of a European integration. This integration, however, should centre on the interests of the majority of the people, and not be based on the interests of multinational corporations and financial markets. The elections to the European Parliament in June 2009 will be an opportunity to change the foundations of the Europe Union and to open a new perspective for Europe.
The electoral platform reinforces the demands for a social Europe. Sustainable European standards preventing poverty should replace the current policy of wage, social, and environmental dumping. The European Left demands a European minimum wage, as well as strong public services.
The European Left wants a peaceful and cooperative Europe. Disarmament and conflict resolution by political and civil means are essential conditions.
The democratic reconstruction of Europe remains an urgent task of today. All human beings living in the EU member states must have the right to participate in the shaping of the European Union and its future development.
The European Left strongly believes that another Europe is possible. The electoral platform concludes “We, the parties of the European Left, campaign together and in our countries for these goals in the run-up to the 2009 elections to the European Parliament. We want a strong left parliamentary group in order to be able to change Europe. Each vote for a candidate of the European Left is a vote for a peaceful, social, ecological, democratic and feminist Europe living in solidarity!”
