The adventurous choice of the President of Georgia to solve the problem of South Ossetia militarily – a problem that has been dragging for 18 years and constituted an object of negotiations in the OSCE framework – has set in motion a bloody circle of violence after the intervention of Russian Federation’s troops.
In our view, great part of the responsibility for today’s crisis falls on foreign interference: The complex and conflict of interests, which have been shaping the region for many decades get even more weight by the new geopolitical significance due to petrol interests.   
The EL warns for any further internationalization of the conflict and one-sided intervening into the conflict leading only to further international confrontation.

This crisis brings to the fore the first negative side effects of the Kosovo issue and depicts the ensuing dangers of the NATO enlargement. Simultaneously, it proves the imperative need for the upgrading of OSCE and the creation of an all-European comprehensive security system oriented to the preservation of peace, the utter rejection of military resolutions to differences between nations and establishing dialogue as the only option for solving all future issues on the European continent and the whole world.

We are emphatically with the civilian population who are once again affected by the military clashes, the victims, and the South Ossetian and Georgian refugees. They need the immediate support from the EU in medicines and humanitarian help. The peoples of the region will all come out defeated if the conflict continues.

Peace is the only solution that is in the interests of the people.
