Secretariat of the Executive Board of the European Left welcomes ETA announcement of the permanent ceasefire as an opportunity for approaching lasting peace in Spain
The announcement given by ETA in Spain that from the 24th of March there will be a permanent cease-fire is welcomed by the Secretariat of the Executive Board of the European Left as a signal of hope and as good news for the people in the Basque country, in Spain and in Europe, opening a new chance and concrete opportunity to come to lasting peace. Obviously it is a first step on a long way with enormous political activity and debates in order to solve and finish with the so called Basque conflict through democratic means and in the constitutional frame. We are conscious that now has to start a process of taking responsibility to use the new chance by all political forces. That is why we expect and support further political initiatives of Spanish EL member parties – the Izuquierda Unida (United Left.); the Spanish Communist Party and the EUiA from Catalunya will do in this sense.
