Recently the EU has made a drive in the right direction trying to modify the so called "Common Position" towards Cuba. But nevertheless that step is clearly short-sighted. <//span> We consider that it is urgent to have a very clear multilateral framework in the international relations, and also a deep concern with the international legality. In that sense the European Union has to disentangle from the coercitive conditions United States try to impose everywhere.
We think that in order to improve the positive influence the EU should have in Latin America and also worldwide it is necessary to eliminate all kinds of discrimination and conditionings with Cuba.
Taking into account that in the next Geneva session of the UN human rights commission, the United States are going to repeat the vote against Cuba, the European governments should obstain from such aggressive behaviour and not follow this path.
The European Left Party:
- urges the elimination of the so called "Common Position" towards Cuba and to restore normal relations without discrimination;
- recommends the party members of the ELP to ask their governments to press the European Council in this same sense;
- considers that the strategy of the EU has to improve in the sense of having better relations with Cuba in order to achieve an international scenario without tensions and with a clear positive attitude towards dialogue;
- asks the governments of he EU not to vote the United States proposal of condemning Cuba in the Geneva session of the UN.
