The Party of the European Left welcomes the representation of Left voices in the Turkish parliament after the successful elections for Kurdish and Turkish democratic deputies, including the election of ODP’s chairperson Ufuk Uras as an MP of Istanbul. We congratulates the ODP as EL member party for its success to achieve parliamentary representation.
We evaluate positively the fact that the Turkish people rejected the attempts of the military to intervene into the political life of the country and voted for continuing to democratize the society.
Turkey is at a turning point of its history. The challenges remain open for its democratization and its ability to fulfill the criteria for the continuation of its EU accession course, which also requires peaceful relations with all its neighbours and any rejection of falling into any trap of nationalist policies.
Therefore it is also imperative to solve the Kurdish issue peacefully and democratically within the borders of the Turkish State and to settle the friendly co-existence of all minorities and people in the country. We stress, the possibility of a military intervention in Northern Iraq would be catastrophic and must be rejected by the Turkish government and all responsible political and economic forces .
The EL expresses its on-going internationalist solidarity with all democratic and peace-loving forces of Turkey in their struggle for a social just, ecological and social sustainable development of their country, for human rights of all peole living in their country and ready to face the difficult and complex tasks which lie ahead of them.
